"Rising bills while water companies continue to pollute our coastline stinks!"
North Norfolk’s new MP, Steff Aquarone, has been highly critical of sewage being dumped off our coastline since the story first seeped out. Now, plans to allow sewage dumping water companies to increase domestic bills by around £94 over the next five years have led him to call for the tap to be turned off on their increased revenue until they do their job.
He said: “Anglian Water should clean up their mess before asking for more money.”
He added: “They want to flood their coffers with more cash from us and yet they’ve paid their bosses bonuses of more than six million pounds since 2019!
“That may have been OK under the Conservatives, but as a Liberal Democrat MP I find it unfair and unacceptable, especially when my constituents are struggling to make ends meet.”
Water companies shares rose on the stock market when the news came through of the planned rises in domestic bills, and that shows the markets think there’ll be more money for investors. Steff Aquarone believes bill payers’ money should first be spent on better services, not bonuses and dividends.
“Of course investors and bosses should get fairly rewarded, but not until we have water and sewage systems that are fit for purpose. Anglian Water and their colleagues cannot just flush away our concerns. I won’t stand by and watch Norfolk’s seas, rivers and broads used as a cesspit while profits pile up.
“Protecting the environment, people’s health and our public services is why I’m here in Parliament. My constituents are worried and it’s my job to speak up for them. People across the spectrum voted for me and I won’t let them down.”
